The Oakleys- the Family Story

George Oakley [1822-1894] married Amelia Sussanah Rogers [1830-1915] on 10th October 1849 in Portsea Island, County of Hants. Witnesses to the marriage were Amelia's brother George and Elizabeth Hill/Still. The marriage certificate informs us that unlike her husband and brother Amelia was illiterate , Elizabeth as witness was also illiterate.  At the time of the marriage George was serving on HMS Illustrious and Amelia was living at 17 Melbourne St Portsea. Her father was Thomas Rogers a shipwright. It appears the certificate states he was based in the Dockyards at the time. Amelia's mother was Hannah Nelder. George died in June 1894 in Portsea Island aged 71 years. Amelia died of senility and heart failure on 31st October 1915 at 6 Ludlow Rd, South Stoneham St Mary Extra Southhampton. She was 86 years old.

George and Amelia had 6 children:

1. Rosina Oakley- born in Portsea in 1851. In the 1851 census she was visiting the Kemp household of Sarah and John at 67 Wiltshire St Portsea with her mother. Amelia was 21 years of age and a Dressmaker.  Rosina was 10 months old. By 1861 she is living with her mother and siblings at her grandmother's Hannah Rogers at 21 Berkeley St Portsea. By 1871 she is living with her mother as head of the household and her siblings at 15 Cumberland R d Portsea. Rosina is 20 years old unmarried and no occupation is listed. In 1879 Rosina married William John Long born in Scotland circa 1847. the 1891 census lists him as a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. They had 2 sons William Edward Long born in Portsea in 1880 and George Joseph Long born 10the May 1881 in Alderney in the Channel Islands and listed as a British subject on future census. At the time of his birth his father was a bombardier with the 7th Brigade royal Artillery. In 1891 the family was living at 22 Cambridge Rd,  Anns Hill, Alverstoke in the County of Hants. By 1901 the family are living at 25 Uxbridge St Edge Hill, Liverpool. William Edward and George are grocers, William is listed as born in Ireland and is a sailor. Rosina has no occupation. By 1911 William  is dead , William Jnr [aged 31 yrs] is head of the household at 46 Aber St West Derby Rd Liverpool, he is single living with his mother [ widow] and brother [aged 29 yrs] also single. Both men remain grocers and have their occupation listed as shop assistant. Rosina dies aged 80 in January 1931 and is buried on 20th January at Anfield Cemetery Merseyside. B y 1898 a William Edward Long is a master mariner in Hampshire but we do not have solid evidence this is our William Edward. No more is known about him. There is a 1902 listing for a George Joseph Long butcher at 140 Victoria Dock rd B. This may be our George Joseph.  No more is known about him.

2. George James Oakley -
born 18th jan 1856 at Landport Portsea Island. In 1861 he is living with his mother and grandmother and by 1871 he is 15 yrs and a Boy 2nd Class in the Royal Navy on the ship Martin based at Portsmouth Harbour. George Jnr follows his father's naval career. In 1901 he is living with his mother Amelia in Sholing Southhampton, she a widow and he a naval pensioner aged 45 and single. We know from George Jnr's naval record he rose to a Leading Seaman by 1883 and served on many ships including the Duke of Wellington around the same years as his father.

3.  Sarah Ann Oakley; born 18th July 1858 at 8 Berkley St Southsea, County of Hants. Like her siblings she was living her her maternal grandmother in 1861 and was a scholar aged 12 living with her mother in Portsea in 1871. On 17th August 1879 she married William John Grinton on Portsea Island. [ref: original marriage certificate held by author. ]. Sarah was 21 years old and William 23 years old. He was already at sea on  the ship HMS Excellent. They were both literate. Sarah was almost 3 months pregnant with my nana Eva Alice Grinton at the time of the marriage. At the time of her marriage her father George is listed as a ships Corporal and she is living at 39 Toronto Rd Portsea. This is where within 1 month and 21 days of giving birth  she would die of the complications of pelvic abscess and blood poisoning or pyaemia caused by the abscess. She died on 19th April 1880. Her brother George was present at her death as we can also presume her mother was. her father had retired in 1875 so was also likely present in the home. It must have been a painful death for Sarah and a shocking tragedy for all. From William's naval record it appears he did not take time out after Sarah's death. He served on the HMS Inconstant from 5th Feb-11th March 1880 having left HMS Excellent on 4th March 1880 and then served on the Alexandra from 12th March and again on 1st November 1880. The period between March and November could be offship due to Sarah's illness and death as there are no finish dates listed in hie service record. We know little Eva Alice  was living with her paternal grandmother Rachael Daines Grinton at 51 Queens rd St Mary's Chatham in the 1881 census and she appears to have been raised by the Grintons from there.

4. Hannah Elizabeth Oakley; born October 1860 in Portsea. In the 1861 census she was 7 months old and living with her maternal grandmother, siblings and mum Amelia in St Jude Portsea Island. Little is known about Hannah other than she married Edward Alfred Porter in October 1881 on Portsea Island. The 1911 census has them living at 84 Timpson Rd Landport Portsea. Edward was a boilermaker on the government dockyards and the document confirms they did not have any children. They had been married for 29 years. The 1901 census states Edward is a blacksmith born in Portsmouth and the couple are living with his parents Alfred Porter a blacksmith and his wife Sophia at 84 Timpson Rd also. They were also living here in 1891 with the Porter family which included Edward's brother Frederick a Tobacconists shop assistant. Hannah died aged 52 years in Portsmouth in September 1913. We do not know anymore about Edward.

5. Alice Margaret Oakley:
born 1867 in Portsea Island. She married Edwin Augustus Webb [1856-1936]  in 1884. They had 3 children Lilian Maud Amelia Webb [born July 1884 Portsmouth] who married Thomas Patrick Miller [ a ships painter] in 1905 and went on to have 2 children-Lilian Mary Margaret Miller [born 4th October 1905 Medway]; Frederick George Miller [born 20th April 1909 Chatham and died April 1979 Maidstone]. Lilian Mary Margaret married James C Barker January 1926 in Medway. The Webb family lived in Chatham and by 1939 in the 1939 register were living at 118 Longley Rd Rochester Kent. Alice died on 27th March 1928 at 18 Kingswood rd Gillingham Dorset.
