John Grinton and Janet Dunbar

The 2 Johns? It is impossible on current evidence to say categorically which John Grinton, the 1746 II or the 1755 III John married Janet Dunbar.  If it was the 1746 John II he would have been 39 years of age when they married and 64 years of age when his last child was born. Not impossible but the death certificate citing John Grinton died 1776 in Dalmenie/Dalmeny as a pauper might suggest this John died before a marriage to Janet Dunbar occurred. The 1755 John Grinton III would have been 30 years of age when he married and 55 years old when his last child was born. It is this John Grinton III that I have in my family line currently but this could be wrong. I will however stick with it until proven otherwise.

We can definitively say that John Grinton Jnr IV [1786-1834] was the son and first child of Janet Dunbar and John Grinton also spelt Grunton born in Corstorphine Midlothian Edinburgh. Therefore John Grinton /Grunton and Janet Dunbar / Dumbar who were married in Dyke Moray on 22nd September 1785 are most likely his parents. The marriage/bann records wording is a little odd:

"Grunton /Dunbar; were matrimonially contracted John Grinton and Janet Dunbar both in this parish and were married accordingly in due time".  Were they married/ elsewhere outside of this parish? Their first child was delivered 11 months later so Janet was not pregnant. In this parish not of this parish means that they may not have been locals.

Let's have a look at Janet Dunbar/Dumbar. There is a baptism record in Dyke Moray for a Janet Dunbar daughter of Alexander Dunbar of Car[?l]sbank . She was baptised 8th May 1767. Witnesses appear to be John Anderson the Younger...David Anderson in ?Carnhill, Janet Dunbar m Dyke and Janet Nielson daughter of Robert Neilson of Fort George. There are Anderson families in Dyke Moray
[ ref: http://www.oocities.org/heartland/plains/5944/pedigree.html] . This document cites an Alexander Dunbar of Carsbanks witnessing the birth of Mary Sutter in 1768. Mary went on to marry William Anderson. Mary and William had a son John too young to be the Younger but William's father was John perhaps he is the younger who witnessed Janet's baptism.

There was also a Janet Dunbar baptised in 1768 in Rafford Moray daughter of William Dunbar and Margaret Dun. The marriage record on Find My past for 1785 has John and Janet resident in Dyke Moray. I suspect but cannot prove that the 1767 Dyke Janet , daughter of Alexander,is the wife of John Grinton.

John Dunbar was the first Earl of Moray [1343-1390] Ref: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dunbar-91. Perhaps Janet was a distant relative or from a lower sub branch of the family.

We will assume for these purposes that Janet Dunbar [b. 1767] was native to Dyke Moray and as we know John Grinton [b.1755] was not.

Let's have a look at their family:

First born: John Grinton IV b
orn 22 /8/ 1786 Corstorphine Midlothian where his parents were resident. He married Rannie Mather on 23/11/1804 in Edinburgh and it is from this couple I descend. More on them later.

#2: Anna Grinton was born on 15/5/ 1788 also in Corstorphine and baptised on 18th June of that year. Anna married Lieutenant John  Stirling Grierson (1781-1851) on 23/8/1806 at St Cuthberts Edinburgh. John was a member of the English peerage http://www.thepeerage.com/p69873.htm. The marriage record lists his name as James whilst children's birth records indicate he is John. They had 8 children 7 of whom were born in Stockbridge Edinburgh  and the youngest in Canada. Margaret (1807-1886); Janet (1811-1860); John aka Big John (1813-1876); Ann (1815-1853);Jessie born 1820; James Taylor (1820-1903); William (1820-1902)-did jessie the triplet die at birth?; Thomas MacKechnie born in Tarbolton Township County of Carelton Canada in 1825. The following tells us how the family ended up in Canada:-"In 1825, John Hedley, age 21, the eldest surviving son of John Hedley & Frances Lawes, married Margaret E. Grierson, 18, daughter of Lieutenant John Grierson, retired British Royal Navy Officer (born in 1783) and Ann Grinton. The Grierson family, Presbyterians, had come from Edinburgh, Scotland in 1822, three years earlier. Lieutenant John Grierson worked as a surveyor, laying out some of the earliest roads in March Township, Carleton County. He later joined his brother Lieutenant James Grierson in developing the Crown Point area of Torbolton Township. After 1833, when steamboats travelled the Ottawa River, the large Grierson home on the Ottawa River served river travellers as both inn and tavern." https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~hedley/genealogy/chapter4.html.

Research undertaken by Phil Grinton in Scotland identified that the Corstorphine OPR 678/2 page 367 frame 0543 has John Jnr's birth  reported along with that of his sister, Anna, as follows:  Anna daughter to John Grinton and Janet Dunbar born 15th May and baptized the 10th of June 1788  Witnesses James Leslie & Jas Simpson.  The same persons had a child named John born 22 August 1786

John Grinton(RN=2466) is mentioned in the parish records in the following years:  1800 tenant in N Clermiston ; 1802 tenant of N Clermiston:  1804 farmer in N Clermiston: 1806 farmer at N Clermiston: 1807 in Braehead Houses; 1808 farmer in Clermiston: 1810 farmer in Clermiston. This suggests the seafaring in our family started with John Jnr.

#3. Thomas Grinton born 2/2/1790 Corstorphine and baptised on the 17th of that month. He married Elizabeth Durland 16/12/1824 in Cornwallis Annapolis Nova Scotia Canada,. Her grandfather Daniel Durland was a highly respected Loyalist from New York who settled in Wilmot , Ontario in 1783. https://annapolisgenealogy.ca/families/Durling. It appears Thomas and Elizabeth had no children. Some vidence points to Thomas dying in Troy Illinois in 1872. An 1860 US Census has a Thomas born in Scotland Farm laborer aged 70 and his wife Elizabeth aged 55 living in Troy -Post Office listed as Joliet. This roughly matches birth years for the two. From anothe reference there is an Elizabeth Grinton who entered the Wills County Poor Farm in September 1874. She had come from Nova Scotia and was residing with Thomas aged 70 from Scotland [ 1860 Census]. By the time she entered the poor farm Thomas was 80 and Elizabeth 67. She passes away on 4/8/1875 from insanity. [ probably dementia]. The book notes there was no proven relationship between William and Thomas however it is clear now they are brothers. Thomas died in 1872 . They may not have had any children so William , Thomas's brother would be the only family. Refer William Grinton below. Ref: Digging up the Dirt: The History and Mysteries of the Will County Poor Farm ... By Gina Wysocki- see excerpt below. We can be confident Thomas died in Illinois in 1872.

#4 Janet Grinton born 10/1/1792 Corstorphine and baptised 27th of that month.

#5 Robert Grinton born 20/10/1793 Corstorphine and baptised 25/11/1793. He married Eliza Whitman on 3/5/1821 Annapolis County Nova Scotia. He had been resident there in 1820. She was a descendant of John Whitman of Weymouth Massachusetts who had emigrated to Nova Scotia. her father was Jacob who dwindled away the family wealth. [see excerpt from book below] The book notes Robert was a farmer. They had 4 children: Elizabeth Ann (1821-1859) married James st Clair Stoddart; Robert Jnr (born 22/6/1823) married Susan Marshall; Cornelius (23/8/1825-6/6/1826); John VI ( 1832-1901) married Martha Jefferson.

#6 Isabel Grinton born 9/9/1795 Corstorphine baptised on 8th oct of that year. The 1871 Canadian Census has an Isabel Grinton aged 76 living with Robert Grinton Jr and his daughter Susan. Perhaps Isabel did not die but emigrated to Canada also. This could be her. No more is known.

#7. Rachel Grinton born 11/7/1797 and baptised 5th August of that year.

#8 James Grinton born 31/10/1798 and baptised in that year on 20th December. He married Eliza Ann Moser on 8/6/1841 in Lunenberg Nova Scotia, Canada. the 1871 census has them living on La Have Island Nova Scotia. James dies on 8th march 1844 at Summerside Lunenberg and he is buried in Bridgewater. Eliza dies in Bridgewater on 12th August 1868 and is also buried there at the Brookside Cemetary. There are no records of children.

#9 Alexander Grinton born 30/11/1800 Cramond and baptised 19/1/1901 at Cramond.By 1838 he is listed in the Nova Scotia, Canada, Census, Assessment and Poll Tax Records as resident of Annapolis where many of bis sisters and brothers were. No more is known.

#10 William Grinton born in Cramond Scotland on 19/10/1802. See his photo below. He was baptised that year on 23rd November. He emigrated to Illinois and is recognised in Troy Township as an early settler. His story in full is below and he is the William referenced with Thomas above. He married Hanna[h] E Topping on 9th September 1840 in Brock Ontario so had clearly emigrated to where his brothers and sisters lived before moving to Illinois. Brock is 3 hrs by car from Torbolton where his sister Anna lived. Probably a little further by horse!  By 1860 the couple were in Troy, Joliet Illinois. They had 5 children the first two being born in Canada: Ann (1842-1887) married Elijah Hunter; William Jnr (1844-1914) married Sarah Ann Stevens; Edward (1845-1881) the 1880 US census has him living with his parents and suffering consumption; Mary (1849-1901) she married Reed Jones. She died in Alameda in California and is buried in Madison County Ohio; David Dunbar (1853-1854).

#11 David Grinton born 9/9/1804 Cramond and baptised 19th November that year. He married Hannah Lumly on on 20th October 1822 in Cramond. They had one daughter Hannah (1828-1910).

#12 Isabella Crawfurd Grinton born 3/9/1807 Cramond and baptised there on 13/9/1807, 153 years before I would be born. We know in 1841 she was a servant to Isabell and Alexander Bain of 507 Lawn Market Edinburgh Tolbooth. The at aged 65 in 1871 she was living at 26 Gifford Park Edinburgh Newington and was a stocking knitter. She never married. Isabella died on 18th September 1894 in Edinburgh at the age of 87 yrs.

#13 Sarah Grinton born 24/12/1808 and baptised 20/1/1809 Cramond.

#14 Margaret Grinton born 27/4/1810 and baptised 10th May that year at Cramond. Margaret married John Trethewey and we are not sure if this was in Scotland. We know from their children's birth dates that the couple were in New Germany Nova Scotia by 1837. They had 5 children: Ann (26/10/1837 Nova Scotia- ?abt 1861 Boston Massachusetts); William (3/10/1838 Nova Scotia-22/11/1900 Fall River Massachusetts) he married Hannah C Green in Fall River 1/1/1890; John Neal (26/8/1840 Nova Scotia- 3/9/1878 Nova Scotia) married Catherine Lohnes; Cyrus born 16/8/1842; Alexander Thomas (16/8/1842 New Germany Nova Scotia-9/8/1901 New Germany Nova Scotia) married Ana Maria Chesley.

It was only the oldest child of John and Janet , my descendant John who remained in Scotland. The rest of the children who we know survived migrated to Canada and some eventually to the US.  Between the years 1770 and 1815, nearly 15,000 Scots travelled from their homeland to settle in Nova Scotia, making up the core of the settlers there; it was for this reason that the port of Pictou became known as the ‘Birthplace of New Scotland’. Due to the large numbers of Highlanders, Gaelic quickly became the third most common European language spoken in Canada, after English and French. https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofScotland/The-Colonisation-of-Nova-Scotia/.

John Grinton Snr III born 1755 has no primary record for his death. A family historian has it as 8th December 1814 Queensferry West Lothian. The area is in the vicinty of Cramond so is plausible. We know he was alive in 1809 as his last child was born in the April of 1810. There is no known date for Janet's death.
